DAN

It's really hard to say something about my HIV and life that I feel is outstanding. I've been positive for more than 20 years and have had an AIDS diagnosis since 1992.

I would like to say that when I was diagnosed, I had some kind of spiritual awakening, made sweeping life changes, and became invested in my health and well-being. I can't. I became angry. I had quit using drugs and alcohol 7 months before my diagnosis, and the last thing I was willing to do was allow something else to do me in.

I know that early on I survived out of spite.
Today, after several close calls, handful after handful on medications, and nearly 19 years in recovery, I find myself living life. I find that HIV has lost many of its teeth, and I am no longer waiting to get sick and die. I'm making plans for and living my future – one that includes love, adventure, peace and faith. Faith that I am on my journey, and HIV is only along for the ride.
