VINNY

I am proud to have served in our US Navy from 1977-1981. What a wonderful life experience that was for me! My last duty station brought me to live in New York City where I attended Culinary School.

I somehow survived that time, even though I was losing my friends on a weekly basis to AIDS. I remember thinking I would never make it. Those were hard times. My story is just like the 1990 movie “Long Time Companion.”

I left my home in NYC, August 1991. Knowing I had 3 years at the most left to live, I sold my life's possessions and life insurance policy, moving to San Diego to live out the last of my days. I knew in my heart that I would be happier in San Diego because of my love for the ocean. I would be in a better environment and have the opportunity to explore holistic health options.

Then 1992 comes along and protease inhibitors start to save all my brothers and sisters from this hellish disease. I thought, “What do I do now? I am going to live?” I decided to help the fight against AIDS. I began volunteering with a program called Holistic Aids Response Program (HARP) and saw the positive impact I can have in the lives of many others.

I continue to fight and care for others who still struggle with this disease. It is my Purpose. It is my Life.
